Metabolism 101: Weight loss from lean tissues.
Here is a fact of human biology that is critical to successfully and long term
weight control. If you get less energy from food than your body needs, your body
looks to get the energy deficit from some other source.
- Your body can get energy by burning up fat tissue.
- Your body can get energy by burning up lean tissues. Lean tissues include
muscle tissue, organ tissue, and bone tissue.
- Your body can get energy by burning fat tissue and lean tissues.
- Your body will likely burn up lean tissue if it thinks you are starving.
If your body consumes lean tissues to make up for the energy you are not getting
from food,
- This dramatically slows your metabolism.
- This dramatically lowers your body's ability to burn calories.
- This makes weight control very difficult without starving yourself which
then slows your metabolism even more.
Why is burning up lean tissues when you diet so counter productive? 95% of your calories
are burned by lean tissues. If your body thinks you are starving, then your body will burn
up lean tissues along with fat tissue. This is how your body evolved to survive famine. If
your body consumes some lean tissues that burn 95% of the calories in the food you eat,
you might survive until the famine is over. So, protecting lean tissues while targeting fat
tissue for weight loss is one of the keys to long term weight control.
Weight loss achieved by skipping meals, starvation diets, using appetite suppressants, or
eliminating food groups like carbohydrates or fats almost always involve weight loss from
lean tissues and a slowed metabolism.
Here is another fact of human biology that is critical to long term weight control. Weight loss
achieved by boosting metabolism using stimulants like caffeine, nicotine, and diet aids
causes a stress response that will stimulate your body to over produce insulin. Over
production of insulin forces your body to store some of the energy from the food you eat as
fat tissue. If you are attempting starvation dieting and stimulant dieting, your body can lose
weight from lean tissue, and then gain back weight in the form of fat tissue when you stop
dieting. This weight gain is rapid because you slowed your metabolism by starvation and
stimulant dieting. This is the classic yo-yo dieting of weight loss followed by rapid weight
gain. Lean tissue loss and a slowed metabolism are followed by the need for more
stimulants just to stay awake. Sound familiar?
If you go back to before your very first diet, before the very first time you tried to starve or
stimulate yourself to a lower weight, your body might have burned 2000 calories a day
even without exercise. Now, your body probably burns significantly less calories (possibly
as low as 1000 calories per day) because the lean tissues has been burned up (or shut
down) by starvation and stimulant dieting. This is how you slowed your metabolism. This is
why it is so hard to lose weight. This is likely why you lose 5 pounds and gain back 6. This
is why, even if you starve yourself, you still cannot lose weight.
If you think your metabolism is slow, and this makes it difficult to lose weight or control your
weight, you are probably correct. Unfortunately, the method you most likely used to lose
weight, (Dieting or Starvation - take your pick) very likely contributed to the problem of
weight gain. But do not despair. The "Phoenix Protocol" offers a very effective way to repair
an impaired metabolism. Go to the section: Metabolism 201 to discover how!
provides your body with the essential nutrients needed for optimal health and lean tissue preservation,
Your lean tissues are protected and supercharged, boosting metabolism. Your lean tissues burn up the energy in the food you eat, and then they burn up fat tissue for weight loss.
